How To Clean Your Carpet

If you are looking to clean your carpets on your own, here are a few thing to concider.

Always use the proper products - Although you could probably clean a carpet stain with tile cleaner, it is not formulated for carpet and could cause discoloration, deterioration, or metling of plastics found in carpet.
Always use the proper equipment - Don't turn a dry vacuum into a wet vacuum. Can we say electrical short?
Dab and press, don't wipe - If you have a new stain on your carpet, dab or press down with a cloth on the stained area to remove as much of the stain as possible. Scrubbing may then become necessary but again remember to dab up the excess water you use, and use a lot of warm water.
Try a steam vacuum - These vacuums are designed to use steam power to lift and remove stains. They are a great means of cleaning in between professional visits.

Here are some other, sum what unorthodox suggestions that we have heard over the years.

Colgate Oxygen Enhanced Toothpaste and Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner have both been used by clients in a pinch. Apparently, a small spot of Oxy style toothpaste will remove new stains thuroughly from carpets and cloths. The Lysol was suggested as a great way to remove colored beverage stains from all surfaces, including carpet. Again though, we don't recommend using the wrong product on the wrong surface but these have been provided through feedback from clients and are use at your own risk.

Another recommendation from a previous customer was to use shaving cream as a remover. It was advised to put a dollup of shaving cream on the spot and let it sit for a half hour then remove with warm water padding and as much scrubbing as necessary.
